The Next Plants to Star in Cosmetics

Studies Reveal New Anti-Ageing Effects in a Series of Active Plant Ingredients

Researchers have published a review of new findings about active plant ingredients and their anti-ageing properties in cosmetic applications in the trade journal "Molecules". The focus of the findings is the discovery that gallic acid and ferulic acid as well as plant formulations which contain thymus vulgaris (thyme), panax ginseng (ginseng), triticum aestivum (wheatgrass) and andrographis paniculata (kalmegh), are extremely promising for the development of new dermo-cosmetics with anti-ageing properties for the skin.

Ferulic Acid and Gallic Acid

Ferulic acid in itself is known for its skin-protecting, brightening and acne-inhibiting effects and is therefore already contained in some cosmetic formulations. However, the researchers are ascribing it an even greater potential. According to them, the latest data has proven that it can prevent skin ageing and reduce hyperpigmentation. A recent clinical study also recognised that gallic acid had an anti-ageing effect in the form of improved elasticity and reduced skin roughness.

Thyme and Ginseng

One clinical study established that thyme as an ingredient can reduce expression lines and help to remodel the face oval. The latest studies on mice also showed benefits for wound healing and the reduction of psoriasis-like inflammations. According to the researchers, ginseng can also promote wound healing. Moreover, the substance can also be used for UV protection, combating wrinkles and moisturising the skin.

Wheatgrass and Kalmegh

Wheatgrass has proven to be effective against so-called "crow's feet wrinkles" and also improves skin hydration when taken orally, according to the researchers. In ex vivo testing, a corresponding oil had the effect of significantly increasing collagen in the investigated skin explants, even under UV radiation. Studies were able to prove that kalmegh extracts increase the dermal density of facial skin and can reduce skin wrinkles and skin slackness as well, the report continues. Kalmegh also offers effective protection against UV-A and UV-B rays, according to the researchers.
